MODULE X: ANIMAL ETHICS AND TECHNOLOGY

12.2 Lab Meat & Okja

****PAPER PLAN DUE 12.4 9am****

Technological developments that purport to solve some of the ethical problems associated with animal consumption

  1. Create animals who don't suffer. Use genetic engineering to create animals that lack an anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) and thus can't suffer, even though they do feel pain. Adam Shriver's proposal, not a reality.
  2. Reduce the greenhouse gases from cattle.  Use genetic engineering to create a cow-kangaroo. Has been done!
  3. Reduce the pollutants in pig excrement.  Use genetic engineering to create an enviro-pig.  Has been done!
  4. Reduce the harm to factory workers.  Replace human workers with robots in slaughter houses.  Has been done!
  5. Use AI and sensors to monitor animals in factory farms.  Has been done!
Okja is a movie about a corporation that purports to solve some of the ethical problems associated with animal consumption by means of genetic engineering
