Monkey Background

  1. Where is the research being done? The National Primate Research Centers - outside companies and universities do their research at the centers; they are "level 3 biosafety labs"
  2. What kinds of monkeys are used?  rhesus macaques and others; note: chimpanzees are not monkeys and are not used any more.
  3. How are they treated, apart from research?  Vet at Tulane Primate Center
  4. How lethal is the research for the monkeys? Wired article with details about the research.  They are "challenged" with high doses, not the low doses used with humans.  Atlantic article explains "monkeys infected with COVID-19 are euthanized to prevent spread to other monkeys or even potentially humans"
  5. How many are used per year? Around 75,000 in 2018, which is .5% of total animals used in research
  6. Is the number going up? Yes, because of coronavirus research
  7. Are there enough monkeys? There is a shortage, making people wonder if they should go straight to human trials.  See this Atlantic article
