Animal Minds: Self-awareness and Morality

 AGENDA

  1. Animal minds worksheet (tab above)
  2. Do animals have self-awareness?
  3. Do animals have morality?

Who thinks self-awareness matters?
Immanuel Kant, "Duties to Animals," p. 1

Peter Singer, "Equality for Animals" p. 53

Self-awareness and the Mirror Test (DeWaal p. 241-243)
  1. The mirror test
    • what is it the "visual mark test"?
    • The mirror test can be passed to different degrees
      • complete pass--they pass the "visual mark test" (dolphins, chimpanzees--Inside the animal mind episode 3, 32:44-36:40)
      • complete pass--elephant example
      • Using mirror as a tool?
complete fail--small songbirds and fighting fish--treat the image like it's a different animals
      • intermediate--dogs and cats who don't react much to image
      • intermediate--can use mirrors as a tool
  2. Why it should not be relied on completely
    • Many forms of self-awareness
      • bats and dolphins recognize their own echoes
      • dog recognizes own urine
      • animal treats own body differently
      • animals control their own cursor on a computer screen
      • people examine their lives, beliefs, preferences
    • Even animals who can pass don't always pass--why not?
  3. Examples--pass or fail?
